AIUS Seminar
A New Role for Local Government?

4.30pm - 7.00pm, Tuesday, 14th July 2015

Many years ago the AIUS annual conference considered what the most appropriate level of government was for the performance of the whole range of societal functions, from defence to garbage collection. In a large country with three levels of government for a small population, local government was not allocated great responsibility. Until fairly recently that position was reinforced by voting for local government being optional. Even more damaging to its cause has been the periodic exposure of conflict of interest between the public duties of individual councillors and vested interests in property and planning decisions.
