CITY BRIEFINGS

City Briefing 28

Our 2012 program opens on a very modern urban theme: IBM Australia's Smarter Cities Initiative, which involves advising organisations on intelligent and sustainable ecosystems, covering water, infrastructure, transport, energy use, education, health and public safety in the built environment.

Catherine Caruana-McManus, who has executive responsibility for the initiative, will provide an overview of the critical role that technology and data play in optimising operations and systems across this wide spectrum, and the implications of the digital economy for urban planning, policy and design.

Catherine's experience for more than 20 years has been in the digital media, communications, geo-spatial and urban development sectors. Before joining IBM in 2006 she had carried out executive roles with MC2 Consulting, PMP Ltd and Telstra, with projects including White Pages OnlineTM and planning for the Sydney 2000 Olympics and Australia's first mobile and broadband networks. Catherine’s formal qualifications are in urban planning, economics and market research.

The Briefing will be on Wednesday, 15th February at the usual venue of Sydney Mechanics' School of Arts, 280 Pitt Street, from 5.00 to 6.15pm, followed by refreshments for those who can linger before rushing home to make the dinner. Help us start the year’s program with a bang, not a whimper.

Quoting the desire to take a new approach focussed on real delivery, Planning Minister Brad Hazzard has set sail for a new strategy.
